hematite - stone of mars, death & war

red iron rich soil of west molokai, hawaii

Hematite is a compact form of iron oxide. It varies considerably in compactness and form. Its hardest and most compact form, which is black and normally found in massive form as nodules (usually kidney shaped) is what is used in jewelry.
An important iron ore, hematite's blood red color (in the powdered form) lends itself well in use as a pigment.
