Blue. The color of spiritual bliss. Peaceful and dreamy, blue floats on the azure seas of tranquility, gazing at the reflected color of heaven. The color of truth, serenity, harmony and inner strength -- blue says "I have compassion, I care...stay with me." Blue is depth, stability, faithfulness, safe harbor. Exuding a dreamlike yearning, blue is female.
Another blue, not so comforting, colder. The color of icebergs, depression, the color of alone. The color of distant skies, this blue is male. Denim cool, the color of 'the blues.'
The coldest blue, the blue of right brain consciousness, expertise, intellect, "true blue." Corporate blue...no 'touchy feely' here...this blue means business.
more about blue
One of the most common colors, blue is also the most spiritual. Color of the sixth chakra -- the "third eye" -- blue represents one's higher mental powers -- wisdom, intuition, balance, clarity and inner knowledge.
As the color of water and sky, blue also symbolizes life-giving water and air, depth and distance, the Mother Goddess and the heavenly pantheon. The favorite color of men as well as many women, meditating on blue can invoke calm and dreamlike states fostering reflection and introspection.
Through the ages, blue has signified fidelity, loyalty and trust. That is why blue flowers, such as forget-me-nots and violets, symbolize faithfulness. That's also why blue is the color of choice for the business world -- it connotes trustworthiness and loyal devotion.
Shades of blue can be perceived as submissive, friendly or authoritative. For instance, a pastel blue is considered passive while a deeper blue can invoke the carefree atmosphere of the Caribbean and yet another blue can conjure up visions of Brooks Brothers and button-down repression. Likewise, the shade of blue a person wears can 'telegraph' information about them. Suzy Chiazzari, author of The Complete Book of Color, says:
"People who wear light blue...are often creative, sensitive and imaginative; they need a peaceful environment. Those who tend to favor dark blue...are known to be intelligent, independent and very responsible; they look for tranquility and like to be surrounded by affection and tenderness."
She goes on to say:
"Blue is a cool, calming color.... It represents the night, so makes us feel calm and relaxed as if we are being soothed by the deep blue of the night sky. Light and soft blue make us feel quiet and protected from all the bustle and activity of the day and alleviate insomnia.... Midnight blue has a strong sedative effect on the mind, allowing us to connect to our intuitive and feminine side. Too much dark blue can be depressing...."
